Willow Ptarmigan ( lagopus lagopus )

Buy_Me!

In winter plumage...

Well adapted to the harsh winter, the ptarmigan locally known as "partridge" prefers the wind blown high ground. In early winter they can be found on the lower slopes foraging on the tenderest alder shoots before they are buried under snow. Seen here "snowshoeing" through deep snow on furlined feet that part to distribute the birds weight.

Keeping one foot in front of the other.
